Michael Baker International Welcomes Bongiovi as EVP, Chief Human Resources Officer

Pittsburgh (June 9, 2014) - Michael Baker International has announced that Joseph R. Bongiovi has joined the Company as Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer.  In this key leadership role, Bongiovi will oversee more than 25 Human Resources (HR) professionals and all HR activities including leadership development, talent management, compensation and benefits, training and recruiting and retention programs.  Additionally, he will be responsible for realigning the HR function to better support the Company’s reorganization toward regional operations.

Commenting on joining the Baker International family, Bongiovi said, “I see both challenge and opportunity in how the HR function will continue to meet or exceed expectations of both executive leadership and employees.  I truly believe that my previous experiences working through the rapidly changing dynamics of global realignment and reorganization in major companies will serve the Company well.  I look forward to adding value to the Company’s pursuit of its strategic objectives.”

Baker International President and CEO Kurt Bergman added, “We are very pleased that Joe has joined us at this critical period of growth and progress; and that he has made a commitment to move to our headquarters in Pittsburgh from North Carolina.  His previous HR leadership positions with billion dollar-plus firms, his ability to assemble and lead a strong HR staff, his previous military service experience and his vast international experience are the qualities and characteristics that make him such a solid fit for the HR leadership position with Baker International.”

Most recently, Bongiovi was at the University of North Carolina (UNC) in Chapel Hill, NC, as a teaching and research fellow and assistant director and advisor for UNC’s Management & Society major degree program.  His previous leadership positions include VP, Global Human Resources for Gilbarco Veeder-Root (Greensboro, NC); Managing Director, Human Resources for Marsh Americas (New York, NY); VP, Human Resources for RP Sherer Americas (St. Petersburg, FL); and VP, Human Resources for Citibank NY Consumer Bank (New York, NY).

Bongiovi earned his Bachelor of Arts at the University of Notre Dame (Notre Dame, IN), his Master of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University (Ithaca, NY), his Master of Sociology at UNC (Chapel Hill, NC) and is currently pursuing his PhD in Sociology, also at UNC.  He is an active participant in the Academy of Management, American Sociological Association, Society for Human Resources Management, Inter-University Seminar on Armed Forces and Society, and the Latin America Studies Association.
