The annual Can Sculpture Contest engages teams of young industry professionals in design and problem-solving skills through a competition to build structures out of canned food. The Michael Baker team not only won three awards (Most Cans Donated, Most Money Donated and People’s Choice), but also raised more than $5,000 and donated the funds and canned goods to the local food bank, Fulfill NJ.
The Culver Boulevard Realignment and Stormwater Capture Project for Culver City recently received a 2021 B.E.S.T. award from the American Public Works Association’s (APWA) Southern California Chapter. A Michael Baker International team led by Jerome Ruddins, Department Manager – Construction Management, provided the Construction Management/Construction Inspection services and water quality testing for this project. What Michael Baker project are you most proud of?
"I am working on a transit plan for a local agency focused on first mile/last mile connections from residential areas to transit service. This project will allow for the development of future connections between a number of low-income communities and existing transit services. Knowing that our work will help connect residents to critical services has made it an extremely rewarding project to work on."
What's the best career advice you've ever received?
"Don't be afraid to raise your hand and take on a challenge. So often, people are quick to bring up problems but aren't ready to be a part of the solution. Many of the opportunities throughout my career have stemmed from being willing to jump in and help when a challenge arises."

The project I am most proud of is the extension of Runway 27L at Philadelphia International Airport (PH). Not only was this a signature project in terms of growth and business opportunity for PHL, but it also included many unique engineering challenges. In particular, the construction of a microtunnel boring of an 1,100-foot, 60-inch casing pipe and jet-fuel pipelines under PHL's active primary runway. This may be a once-in-a-career project!"

The episode includes interviews with Michael Baker's Jason Stith, Technical Manager – Bridges, and Stacee Hans, Project Coordinator with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC). In the early morning hours of Veterans Day 2020, two trucks collided on the lower deck of the bridge, resulting in a fire that caused significant damage. The bridge, which carries an estimated 160,000 vehicles across the Ohio River each day, was forced to close for inspection and repair. iFlood is the NWS lab’s integrated system that produces an 84-hour forecast. Arslaan ran individual models to simulate different scenarios of river flows and rainfall and used the results to create a forecast from iFlood that could be sent to the NOAA and National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington Forecast Office. As part of his research, he tested whether NWS could create forecasts as far as 30 days in advance of flooding and found that the integrated iFlood system was able to provide reasonable flood predictions up to two weeks in advance. The Ironbound community is a force in the local economy, but serious flooding and drainage issues threatened safety and mobility in the area. To overcome these challenges, Michael Baker worked with the city to create a scope for the project and explored many alternatives during the concept study phase, which incorporated roadway resurfacing, sidewalk, curb and ADA curb ramp improvements, new drainage inlets, manholes and pipes to begin the separation of stormwater from the combined sewer overflow culverts. At Michael Baker International, safety is our number one priority. Our crews resumed inspecting the upper sections of the Hernando de Soto Bridge, which spans the Mississippi River between Arkansas and Tennessee. Last month, members of our team were inspecting this portion of the bridge when they noticed a fracture in a different area of the bridge. They took immediate action and contacted local authorities to shut down all traffic across and under the bridge. We are proud of our team’s swift and effective response. We are also working closely with Arkansas Department of Transportation and Tennessee Department of Transportation to design the repairs needed to reopen the bridge to traffic as soon as it is safe to do so.
The Ronald McDonald House provides a comforting “home away from home” for families of seriously ill children receiving treatment in Orange County hospitals. Kathleen Hong (Engineer – Water Supply/Wastewater) and Dorothy Tung (Civil Associate – Surface Water) delivered the donations the team collected.

Part of a national movement to establish communities, or #agrihoods to connect people with agriculture, this project features 5.5 acres of farmland, and a farm-to-table restaurant. This unique community in Encinitas, California, also seeks to address the “missing middle” by providing 250 homes of diverse types, many of which will be easily attainable by working families.
Michael Baker’s Environmental Impact Report for Fox Point Farms was a key element in this project’s permit being unanimously approved by the Encinitas City Council.

The Safe Routes to School programs aim to make it safer for students to walk and bike to school and encourage more of these activities. The state of Mississippi's $1.2 million program was funded by the Federal Highway Administration and the Mississippi Department of Transportation.

Prior to this project, this particular Canton neighborhood had no shoulders or sidewalks to do that. Following implementation, the project site has been flown biennially by Michael Baker pilots Ryan Phaneuf, Environmental Associate, and Christina Stege, GIT Specialist, with the goal of producing a high-resolution orthoimage of the restoration area. This aerial image allows our restoration ecologists to quickly assess large-scale changes in vegetation, as well as track the dynamic path of Trabuco Creek as it meanders and creates new topographic features. Videos from the drone flights are also provided to the client and regulatory agencies as a simple but effective medium to showcase the progress of the project.

After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy with a degree in History, Kyle served at Camp Pendleton, led U.S. Marines in combat operations in Iraq, and helped transition military personnel to civilian careers. He earned a Master of Science degree in Structural Engineering from U.C. San Diego and spent nearly three years designing the Atlantic Crossing of the Panama Canal, a world-record-setting PC/PS concrete segmental box-girder cable-stayed bridge.
Kyle helped to expand Michael Baker’s West Region bridge inspection practice by researching markets and clients to gain funding, earning Federal Highway Administration Bridge Safety Inspection Certification and becoming one of our firm’s select rope access and climbing (SPRAT/IRATA) inspectors.
