Michael Baker International Experts to Participate in Key U.S. - Africa Infrastructure Conference

The Company Shows Commitment to African Infrastructure Development

Washington, D.C. (October 8, 2014) - Michael Baker International’s Director of Business Development and Africa Specialist, Rick Orth, will moderate a workshop on Airport Construction, Safety, and Security at the Corporate Council on Africa’s 2014 U.S. -Africa Infrastructure Conference.  Participants in the workshop will discuss possibilities for improving the aviation capabilities of Sub-Saharan countries, where excessive passenger fares and cargo charges hinder economic growth. Baker aviation specialists, including Greg Fredrickson, National Practice Lead for Airfield Engineering, will also participate and provide key industry-insights.  The Conference brings together U.S. and African government officials, international infrastructure experts, and leading decision makers from the public and private sectors to explore opportunities to invest in Africa’s development. This year’s conference, themed “Building Resilient Cities,” will highlight how major metropolises in Africa are coping with rapid urbanization and the needs of a growing middle-class.

“Our sponsorship allows Michael Baker International to highlight its previous work on over a dozen airport projects in such countries as Cameroon, Nigeria, and Uganda, to name a few,” said Rick Orth. “The Company’s participation builds on the success of the recent, first-ever African-U.S. Leaders’ Summit, enabling us to enhance Africa’s capacity and capability to build much needed infrastructure.”

Michael Baker International’s leadership and initiative underscore the Company’s passion for Africa. Over the next several months, the Company will pursue critical development, training, and peacekeeping opportunities to build professional capabilities in Africa’s workforce, advance U.S. foreign policy objectives, and expand business into valuable new territory.  Michael Baker International is a Gold sponsor of the conference.

According to Nick Gross, Chief Operating Officer of International Operations, “The CCA conference is an exceptional opportunity for Michael Baker International to continue positioning itself as an industry leader and major player in Africa. I am looking forward to working with our new friends and partners in Africa, where we will play a major role in advancing the peace and development of the continent as a whole.”
