Alexandria, Va. (December 3, 2015) - Michael Baker International, a global leader in engineering, consulting, planning, technical and professional services, recently got behind the wheel and drove support for an important cause in Washington, D.C. Employees from the company’s Alexandria, Va. office participated in the CANstructionDC 2015 competition, part of a national effort to raise awareness of the ongoing problem of hunger in local communities around the world. Teams from more than 25 architectural and engineering firms stacked canned goods in inventive ways at the National Building Museum in the nation’s capital on November 22.
The Michael Baker team took a cue from the program’s theme of “Transportation” and created “NASCAN #88.” The resulting three-dimensional structure is a replica of a car recently sponsored by Michael Baker that was driven by one of the world’s top professional race car drivers. Michael Baker’s 15-member team spent six hours creating the automobile out of 1,700 cans of produce. CANstruction is donating the canned goods to the Capital Area Food Bank of Washington, D.C. The food can be used to prepare more than 200 meals.
“Michael Baker’s involvement in CANstruction demonstrates how ‘We Make a Difference’ in our local communities this holiday season by supporting those in need in the region,” said Andrea Ryon, Alexandria office executive for Michael Baker International. “Community service is a major component of Michael Baker’s yearlong 75th anniversary commemoration, and it is also a hallmark of how we do business every day,”
Designs were on display through November 29. This is the third consecutive year that Michael Baker entered the regional competition.
Recognized as an innovator in promoting global hunger relief, CANstruction hosts annual competitions and exhibit events in more than 150 cities around the world, which has led to the collection and donation of nearly 30 million pounds of food to the needy since 1992.
