ENR California Recognizes Michael Baker International's Innovative Solution to Stabilize Damaged Roof of Tustin Hangar 1

Company's Successful Effort to Restore Structural Integrity to World's Largest Wood Frame Structure Wins Another Award

Irvine, Calif. (December 3, 2015) - Michael Baker International, a global leader in engineering, consulting, planning, technical and professional services, recently earned additional recognition for its emergency shoring solution for Hangar 1 at the former Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) in Tustin, California.  Earlier this week, Engineering News-Record’s (ENR) California branch presented the company with the award for “Best Small Project” for its role in stabilizing the building after a partial structural collapse in October 2013.

“Michael Baker International looked well beyond the traditional approaches to solving this unique challenge with the Tustin hangar, and in doing so, we helped to preserve a piece of history,” said Rick Rubin, regional director of Michael Baker International’s west region. ”Our client applauded our pivotal role in this project, and we’re proud of this latest recognition from ENR.”

During the partial collapse, part of the structure fell to the floor and left a sizable hole. Michael Baker experts engineered a plan to stabilize the building from the outside with steel crane towers and cable rigging.

In addition to the most recent recognition from ENR California, the MCAS Tustin Hangar stabilization project earned accolades for the Michael Baker team from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Orange County as the historical renovation project of the year; ASCE Los Angeles as the small project of the year; and the Orange County Engineering Council for engineering project achievement.

Originally constructed in 1943, Hangar 1 housed blimps that were used for Pacific Coast reconnaissance during World War II. The National Register of Historic Places included the hangar on its list in 1975. In 1994, ASCE named the site a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark with the distinction of being the “Largest Wood Frame Structure in the World.”
