Baker Awarded CM/CI Services Contract for Norfolk Southern Rutherford Intermodal Facility Expansion

Harrisburg, Pa. (November 20, 2013) - Michael Baker Jr., Inc., an engineering unit of Michael Baker International, LLC, has been awarded a two-year, multimillion dollar contract to provide construction management and construction inspection (CM/CI) services for the expansion of Norfolk Southern’s (NS) Rutherford Intermodal Facility near Harrisburg, Pa.  This expansion will effectively double the capacity of the current facility.

The scope of the project includes 405,000 cubic yards of earthwork, sub-grade preparation for track building, drainage structures, 84,000 square yards of roller compacted concrete (RCC), Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) wall, cast-in-place concrete retaining wall, a reinforced soil slope wall, various utility installations, high-mast lighting, security equipment and stormwater management features.  Baker will be working with NS’s Maintenance of Way Department to coordinate the installation of 37 switches, 46,000 feet of track and 47,000 tons of ballast.  Furthermore, the project will take place within the existing intermodal facility and, together with NS’s Construction Department, Baker will oversee and coordinate the construction during active Norfolk Southern railroad operations.

“We appreciate this opportunity from Norfolk Southern to continue to provide them with high-quality CM/CI services,” said Baker’s Joe Palladino, P.E., project manager. “Considering the significant challenges we have encountered on previous projects, Norfolk Southern has confidence that our team will meet the challenge of the Rutherford project.”  Previously, Baker provided construction services on the Franklin County Regional Intermodal Facility in Greencastle, Pa., and the Triple Crown Facility located in Rutherford, Pa.
