Michael Baker International Awarded Consolidated Addressing Project to Improve Data Use for the City of San José

Firm provides DATAMARK® Suite of GIS Tools and support to pave the way for transition to Next Generation 9-1-1

Pittsburgh (August 2, 2017) - Michael Baker International, a global leader in engineering, planning and consulting services, today announced that the City of San José, Calif., has awarded a master address database development and implementation project to the firm. Once completed, the project will improve the use of location data and other vital information throughout city government. The work will draw on Michael Baker’s database management expertise and utilize the firm’s DataMark® suite of geographic information systems (GIS) software and support services designed to automate address data creation, consolidation and maintenance processes for government clients. The database work and software delivered also will have an added benefit to the city as it prepares to transition to Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1).

The project, which is currently underway, consists of three major phases that include consolidation of multiple disparate address datasets into a master database, creation of a web-based address portal, and the implementation of on-premise software for city personnel to continually update and maintain the new master database in the city enterprise. The creation of an innovative on-premise address portal will enable city personnel – elected officials, police, fire, emergency medical response and 9-1-1 call center operators – to continually update and maintain the Master Address Database, while also improving the permitting system and integrating other addressing systems city-wide.

As the city prepares for NG9-1-1 integration in the coming years, the new database and software will help to transition San José to the NG9-1-1 Internet-based 9-1-1 system that will allow telecommunication devices with Internet connectivity to reach public safety officials for emergency services. NG9-1-1 requires precise location data, improved workflows and continuous data maintenance and refinement to route callers to the nearest Public Safety call center.

“Michael Baker’s innovative approach and state-of-the-art software developed for the government enterprise demonstrates how We Make a Difference for our communities by consolidating and validating complex address databases consistent with industry standards and best practices,” said Steve Bein, Michael Baker’s GIS Project Manager. “Michael Baker’s DataMark suite of solutions, combined with our expertise in this space, provide the best value to the city.”

The partnership with the City of San José continues Michael Baker’s response to the national mandate for NG9-1-1 upgrades to legacy systems that support first responders across the United States. The work is being done in collaboration with city staff to ensure the project meets the needs of San José and for an efficient implementation.
